Artist's Statement and Brief Bio

Statement:

As a child I was encouraged to pursue my talent for illustration. As I aged this gave way to drawing which incorporated personal components not necessarily related to reality. Exposure to mechanical drawing, watercolor and ceramics in high school led me to pursue a degree in sculpture and ceramics. A life lived and worked mostly outdoors, furnished the natural ingredient that is common throughout much of my work.
Many of my works are realized through wood because it is alive. When working with “dead” wood the challenge is to reincarnate the tree: recovering the essence of what was once a living entity. I frequently use direct casting techniques to form bronze or aluminum pieces that replicate the grain and structure patterns only available with wood. Presently, I am combining dissimilar materials to illustrate balance and tension between man and nature.
My work is about the relationship between my thoughts, the materials and process and the physical ability to accomplish the results I envision. Under the right circumstances, time stands still.
